Retaining walls solve real problems — sloped yards, eroding banks, and grade changes between outdoor levels. Block walls create privacy, define boundaries, and add structure to a property. Citiscapes designs and builds both, engineered for the soil conditions and grade changes on each specific site.
How retaining and block walls are built: Both wall types start with a concrete footing poured below grade and sized for the wall height and load. Block or CMU is laid course by course with mortar, rebar, and grout fill for structural integrity — the taller the wall, the more reinforcement required. Retaining walls include a gravel drainage layer behind the wall with weep holes or drain pipe to relieve the hydrostatic pressure that causes walls to fail over time. Finish options — stucco, stone veneer, or painted block — are applied after the structure is complete and cured.
Citiscapes designs and builds retaining walls and block walls for residential properties throughout Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Paradise Valley. Whether the goal is managing a sloped backyard, creating tiered planting areas, or installing a privacy wall along a property line, we engineer the right solution for the grade change and soil conditions on each site.
Retaining walls in Arizona fail for one of two reasons: an inadequate footing or missing drainage behind the wall. Hydrostatic pressure from monsoon rain accumulation will push an unreinforced wall forward within a few seasons. We build with proper footing, gravel backfill, and drainage so the wall does its job for decades.
Block walls are one of the most visible features in any Phoenix property — and the finish matters as much as the structure underneath. Whether you want a plain painted CMU privacy wall or a finished wall with a stone veneer cap and lighting, we plan the look from the start so it integrates with the rest of the outdoor design.
We also build tiered planters, raised garden beds, decorative landscape walls, and grade separation walls as part of larger backyard projects. If a yard has a slope, there's almost always a smarter way to deal with it than ignoring it.

Our backyard was nothing but dirt, weeds, and dog crap for years. I was so embarrassed by it. In fact, I tried to avoid going outside so I wouldn't have to look at it. I really wanted a Gazebo and a small shed, but we needed to get concrete slabs first. So I got some quotes for extending the patio and add room for a shed, and to put in a large 12x12 slab for my Gazebo. I was hesitant to reach out to Citiscapes because the job was so small and I was afraid they would be out of my price range. But their reviews were all great, which made me feel more comfortable about going with them over a smaller company. Joey totally understood my vision. He never made me feel like the job was "too small" and I was actually quite surprised that his quote was in line with what I had budgeted. He even priced out things that I wanted to get done in the future. I was so impressed with their work and Joey's professionalism, I reached out to them again for "phase 2" which involved more concrete, installing irrigation, outdoor tile, and a retaining wall for my plants. Again, it was right on budget! I now have the backyard of my dreams and plan to use Citiscapes again when we are ready to do the front yard. You can see the before and after photos below.
