Real grass is still the right call for a lot of Phoenix yards — especially when you want a natural feel underfoot, a cooler surface around a play area, or a look that artificial turf can't quite replicate. The right sod variety and proper installation make all the difference in how long it lasts.
How sod installation works in Arizona: Soil prep is the most important step — tilling the existing ground, amending soil to improve drainage and nutrient retention, and grading for proper water flow. Sod is laid in a staggered pattern with tight seams, rolled to establish soil contact, then put on a watering schedule calibrated for Arizona heat. Warm-season varieties like Bermuda and Zoysia handle the Phoenix summer; ryegrass handles the winter months when overseeded in the fall.
Citiscapes installs sod for residential lawns, backyard play areas, and commercial landscapes throughout the Phoenix metro area. We work with Bermuda, Zoysia, and seasonal ryegrass blends — helping homeowners choose the right variety based on sun exposure, traffic level, and watering preferences.
Sod installation in Arizona is different from most of the country. The soil is alkaline, often compacted, and doesn't retain moisture well without proper amendment. Skip that step and the sod struggles within weeks. We prepare the soil correctly, grade for drainage, and install with tight seams and firm contact that give new sod the best chance to root quickly.
The first 30 days are critical. We provide detailed watering guidelines calibrated to Arizona temperatures so homeowners know exactly what the lawn needs as it establishes — no guessing.
For clients who want real grass without full summer water usage, Citiscapes also designs hybrid yards that combine sod in high-use zones with artificial turf or xeriscaping where traffic is lower. It's a practical solution that a lot of Phoenix families are choosing.

Our backyard was nothing but dirt, weeds, and dog crap for years. I was so embarrassed by it. In fact, I tried to avoid going outside so I wouldn't have to look at it. I really wanted a Gazebo and a small shed, but we needed to get concrete slabs first. So I got some quotes for extending the patio and add room for a shed, and to put in a large 12x12 slab for my Gazebo. I was hesitant to reach out to Citiscapes because the job was so small and I was afraid they would be out of my price range. But their reviews were all great, which made me feel more comfortable about going with them over a smaller company. Joey totally understood my vision. He never made me feel like the job was "too small" and I was actually quite surprised that his quote was in line with what I had budgeted. He even priced out things that I wanted to get done in the future. I was so impressed with their work and Joey's professionalism, I reached out to them again for "phase 2" which involved more concrete, installing irrigation, outdoor tile, and a retaining wall for my plants. Again, it was right on budget! I now have the backyard of my dreams and plan to use Citiscapes again when we are ready to do the front yard. You can see the before and after photos below.
